Even though the php error says the problem is with the index.php file maybe there is something wrong with the root .htaccess file. Try deleting the root .htaccess file.

Hmm maybe the problem is not related to BPS and is being caused by something else. Normally just deleting the root .htaccess file fixes any issues. Try restoring the site from a backup.
